In The Black: Moonshot Covid and Tariff refunds
Did you pay interest or fees to the IRS during COVID?
If so, there's a chance you might get refund!??? A court said taxpayers had until July 2023 to file/pay without penalties due to COVID-19, but the government is likely to challenge that ruling.
For the 2020-2023 disaster period, did you have:
Penalties assessed for failure to timely file returns, failure to pay taxes, or failure to make estimated tax payments?
Interest assessed on late payments?
Here’s the deal:
In November, the case of Kwong v. United States brought up a challenge over tax payment deadlines during COVID. The court ruled that due to a specific tax law and the federal COVID-19 disaster declaration, tax deadlines were automatically postponed for over three years, from January 2020 through July 10, 2023. Under this logic, the IRS shouldn’t have charged penalties or interest for late filing or payments anytime within that 3.5-year window. Unsurprisingly, the government (IRS/DOJ) disagrees and is expected to appeal this decision.
If you think this MAY be you and you have significant fees and interest for this period, it may be worth your while to request an abatement! You do need to file by 7/10/2026 - so reach out, and we can review for you!
Tariff refunds for importers
So those tariffs got overruled. So if you imported anything and paid tariffs directly, you can apply for a refund. Naturally, the process is complicated and obtuse. So let us know if you need help!
